Journey maps advanced customizations
Advanced lane controls help you structure and adjust journey maps as they grow. You can organize detailed steps using sub-lanes and refine your layout by inserting lanes exactly where needed.
Sub-lanes
Sub-lanes allow you to create a lane within a parent lane. This helps you organize supporting details without cluttering the main journey view.
How it works
-
Go to your journey map and locate the parent lane where you want to add a sublane.
-
Click the three-dot (⋮) menu on that lane.

-
A dropdown menu will appear.
-
Select “Add Sublane” from the list.
- The sublane will be created directly under the selected parent lane.
You can add a sub-lane inside an existing lane to break down complex stages into smaller sections. Sub-lanes create a clear hierarchy, making it easier to understand detailed journeys at a glance while keeping related information grouped together.

Flexible placement of lanes and steps
You can insert new lanes above/below or steps before/after any existing lane or step to adjust your structure without rebuilding the map.

How it works
Select the position where you want to add a lane or step, then choose to insert it before/after the selected step or above/below the selected lane. The new lane or step is placed automatically in the correct order, allowing you to reshape your layout while keeping everything structured and aligned.
Integration with other UserBit tools
Journey maps can be integrated with other UserBit tools to add context and connect your work across the workspace. You can link personas and research repository insights directly to your journey map to better understand who the journey is for and what research supports each step.
These integrations help you keep user context, evidence, and journey structure connected in one place.
To learn how to add and manage personas and insights, see the Integration section.
